vandrarhem hon besökt och hon har rest runt landet i flera månader;
”enviromental science” i Canberra senast sex månaderna.
Många tycker kanske att vandrarhemmet
ligger lite avsides. Det är drygt sex kilometer till ”tätorten”
i Port Stephens-området Nelson Bay.
Okey lite kanske, men rejält stort i alla fall.
landsorten i Sverige.
fantastiska utbudet i systembutiken i Nordstan.
Solen
kastar ilskna reflexer i alla skinande blanka kromdetaljer.
GOD JUL/MERRY CHRISTMAS
från Samurai Beach Bungalows
och
PS. Tack för kommentarer och mail. DS.
English version:
Anyhow, I have not seen so very much of the wildlife. It is limited to two live and one dead kangaroo, a number wombats (alive), lizards type rather large and some snakes considerably flattened in the asphalt and among that countless small rabbits along the road that look like little lost fur caps.
-The only place like this, which we visited, is the hostel in Cape Tribulation, north of Cairns, said the friends Linnéa Nyberg and Lisa Larsson, who for a few weeks have "done" the east coast from north to south. Linnea has visited Australia for three weeks while Lisa has studied "Enviromental Science" in Canberra during the last six months.
Many may think that the hostel is a bit remote. It is just over six kilomters to "capital" of the Port Stephens area, Nelson Bay; a neat typical tourist town with a large marina. You can, by taking a small detour, end up at the Salamander Shopping Centre - a gigantic shopping mall, which probably occupies an area the size of an 18-hole golf course. Exaggerating? Okay maybe a little, but significantly big anyway.
If you choose instead to cycle or drive (or walk) six kilometers in the opposite direction, towards Newcastle. Well then you will end up in a small drive-through-village called Anna Bay. Here you may find a supermarket, a bakery, a post office, a Thai restaurant, a café (or two), a bike and surf shop, a real estate agent some small artisans and two bottle shops with an assortment barely larger than a Systembolaget store in a rural town in Sweden. These bottle shops, however, have a very limited range and I understand my Australian friends' surprise when they visit me in Gothenburg and get to see the gigantic range of alcoholic beverages and beers in some of the big Systmbolags Stores .
Anna Bay also has a Taverna, or pub if it fits better. When I pass by on a sunny day, there may be a dozen customers there, mostly middle-aged men who drink beer. Probably Victoria Bitter or Tooheys.
Four meaty middle aged bikers had hung their black leather vests' and their black matt lacquered helmets, two of German military style, at the handlebars of their shiny Harley's. The sun casts angry glare in all shiny chrome details. They have long bushy beard, probably in full accordance with the behavior and appearance-code, and those of them who still have any hair, has it like a small braid. James Naldo a local country and western singer with a deep sonor voice, tears off some of Elvis' most popular songs, and a couple of the bikers goes away in a kind of solo dance performance.
It
is at least not the big cities that make Australia a different and
exciting travel destination. Big cities around the world are more
alike than different. No, of course it is the unique and unusual
nature and the small villages and cities in the almost deserted
outback that makes the country, the continent so special.
At the hostel where I am,
nature is the major asset. The hostel is surrounded by lush greenery,
and now and then a koala pops up and sits in an eucalyptus tree and
quietly nibbling leaves. On a road sign I saw that last year 28
koalas was killed in traffic here in Port Stephens and this year its
31 so far.
I also made a kind of
darwinistik discovery, namely that as more beautiful and colorful
birds are the worse they sound. I'm not sure that an ornithologist
would totally agree, but small flocks of rainbow-colored parrotts
chatters hysterical around the bungalows. Beautiful, yes, but they
sound frightfull!
Anyhow, I have not seen so very much of the wildlife. It is limited to two live and one dead kangaroo, a number wombats (alive), lizards type rather large and some snakes considerably flattened in the asphalt and among that countless small rabbits along the road that look like little lost fur caps.
-To be able to expand we
wanted to cut down some trees, but it was not allowed by nature
conservation authorities because this is a koala habitat, said Sandy as
with her husband Mark have run Samurai Beach Bungalows in twenty
years.
We the guests here are
probably thankful that the trees remain.
Marlies from Maasticht in
Holland believe that this hostel is different from most other hostels
she visited and she has traveled around the country for several
months. Darwin, Alice Springs, Cairns, Brisbane, yes, almost the
entire east coast and visited countless backpacker hostels.
-It's the nature and the
familiar atmosphere that is unique here, and much less common in most
other hostels around. Here is the place you can cool down, take it
easy, have a dip in the pool.

I arrived here in
Samurai Beach Bungalow a couple of days ago after a fantastic cycling
from Newcastle. About 60 kilometers and a magnificent tailwind.
I look forward to celebrating Christmas with the about thirty guests that are staying in Samurai Beach. I live in a dorm with Raquel and Guillaume from Toulouse, Matt from Sydney and Colin from Rockhampton. In the room next to ours stays Ashlen from Alaska, Sarah from Scones in Australia and Lisa and Linnea from Stockholm and Sandra as I do not know wher she comes from. In another bungalow is Ember of Formosa, Song from Korea, and Daniel, a young boy from Adelaide. Another bungalow is inhabited mainly by a group of young Germans.
Yes, as you can imagine, it will probably be a very unusual and ..... exciting Christmas.
Today I will go to the beach by the village of Anna Bay, having a swim and do some sandboarding.
????
Sandboarding, yes it means that you fearlessly plung yourself from the high and steep sanddunes at Birubi Beach on a small and well polished fibreboard. See you ....

Peter
